‘We’ll see how it comes along’: Huge news for those waiting on ‘Top Gun 3’
The minute that Top Gun: Maverick hit theaters, fans wanted a third film in the franchise. And now, three years later, it does feel like things are moving forward with a new installment to Pete “Maverick” Mitchell’s world.
Director Joseph Kosinski has been working on his film F1: The Movie for quite a while and now that the film is getting ready to hit theaters, many have asked the Maverick director about the third film. And when speaking with ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan, Kosinski shared with the outlet that things are looking good for the third film.
“Ehren Kruger is writing the script as we speak. It’s a big idea that I spent almost a year developing — working with some friends at the Navy and Lockheed,” Kosinski said. “And yeah, Ehren’s into it now, so we’ll see how it comes along.”
Kosinski went on to mirror something that Tom Cruise said as well. The third film couldn’t just happen. It wasn’t easy to bring Top Gun: Maverick to life and so the third film needed to have a real story behind it. “It was about coming up with an idea that — again — felt like a new challenge. Something that opens up the story in a way you just can’t let go,” he told ScreenRant. “And I think the idea is so ambitious. That’s what’s exciting to me.”
The people want more!
The hype for Top Gun 3 is very real. At any turn, people have been asking the creatives behind it about the film. During Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning press, Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie were both asked about it and they each talked about how it is in the process of being written currently. And with a lot of the Dagger squad being some of the biggest names in Hollywood, it’s an easy sell to me.
In our own conversation with Kosinski for F1: The Movie, I talked with him about how there are moments in F1 that really felt like a continuation of themes he presented within Top Gun: Maverick.
So while we don’t have a lot to go on, at least we know that the third Top Gun movie is underway and that’s enough for me and my Dagger loving heart.
