Fans have been very excited about Matt Shakman’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Rightfully so. They are dubbed Marvel’s “First Family” and yet we have waited over ten years to see their introduction into the Marvel universe. To be fair, that wasn’t fully on the MCU but it is about time to see how Reed Richards, Sue and Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm all play into the larger universe.

But even though we’ve loved the Fantastic Four team since the 60s doesn’t mean that it is easy to weave them into the live-action world. With two different attempts already in the books, there is a lot riding on the Pedro Pascal-led team.

Translating comic book characters to live-action isn’t as easy as the Marvel Cinematic Universe has made it out to be. Sometimes, they have cheesy lines and say things that real people don’t say. So when you put them in the live-action format, you have to figure out how those catchphrases function within these characters.

So color me surprised when in the new First Steps trailer somehow made “Clobberin’ time” not only work but feel emotional at the same time.

This trailer has a lot to unpack. Franklin Richards is clearly in it, we get to see more of the team, and we even have a cute little brother vs. brother-in-law spat about their space suits between Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn) and Reed.

All that has me excited for this film, of course, but I do think it is surprising how much the press has made me care for Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach). Did I expect to cry hearing “Is it clobberin’ time? Hell yeah”? No I didn’t and yet this makes me feel so emotional yet excited to see what Shakman and his team have in store for us.

So make sure to get your tickets now!
