We’re thrilled to announce the launch of Roll Initiative, a brand-new corner of the internet dedicated to all things tabletop gaming.
Roll Initiative is a space built for the people who get it — the ones who see a stack of rulebooks and feel a weird sense of excitement instead of dread. The ones who know the joy of lovingly painting a miniature, only to roll a one and watch that same miniature get absolutely obliterated in its first turn. It’s for the strategists, the storytellers, the dice hoarders, and the players who know that every game night is a chance to create something memorable.
The tabletop genre has quietly (and not-so-quietly) exploded over the last decade. Shows like Critical Role have brought D&D to mainstream audiences, games like Ticket to Ride and Pandemic have made strategy gaming accessible, and the enduring success of Warhammer 40K has proven that rolling dice and building armies is as popular as ever. The board game market alone is projected to hit $30 billion globally by 2026. It’s a cultural movement. And Roll Initiative wants to be part of that story.
Leading this adventure is Aidan O’Brien, our founding editor and a lifelong tabletop enthusiast. In his own words:
I fell in love with boardgames and wargaming when I first cracked open Hero Quest in 1989. Ever since, I have spent countless hours forming incredible memories with my fellow gamers. I truly believe that right now is one of the best times in the history of this industry. Passionate creatives are working on every kind of game you could imagine, and emergent technologies like 3D Printing allow people all over the world to ignore the limitations of logistics and geography and get their creations to people who can make them in their own homes. I want Roll Initiative to be a place that celebrates that creative ingenuity and helps to shine a light on the incredible talent at work all over the world.
